Living on the Costa Blanca: What Is It Really Like?

For decades the Costa Blanca has drawn Northern Europeans in search of sun, space and a relaxed way of life. But what is it actually like to live here, rather than just visit on holiday? In this article we paint an honest picture of daily life, the costs and the practical side.
The rhythm of daily life
Life on the coast moves at a calmer pace than in the Netherlands or Belgium. The day starts early, before the sun is at its hottest, and in the early afternoon things pause for the siesta. Social life happens mostly outdoors: on terraces, at the market and on a stroll along the promenade. With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, that is not the exception but the norm.
What does it cost to live here?
In general the price level is lower than in Northern Europe, although the gap has narrowed in recent years. The biggest savings show up in fresh produce, eating out and hospitality.
- Groceries: local markets and supermarkets are good value, especially for vegetables, fruit, fish and wine.
- Eating out: a menu del dia still costs between 12 and 18 euros per person in many towns.
- Energy: air conditioning in summer and heating in winter add up; good insulation makes a real difference.
- Local charges: the annual property tax (IBI) and the community fees on an urbanisation are usually modest.
An international community
You are not on your own here. Large Dutch, Belgian, British and Scandinavian communities live along the whole coast, with clubs, associations and shops geared towards them. English will get you by at first, but anyone who learns a few words of Spanish becomes part of the town much faster.
Healthcare, schools and accessibility
Healthcare in Spain is of a high standard, and in many coastal towns you will find doctors who speak English or even Dutch. There are international schools for families, and Alicante-Elche airport connects the region with direct flights to most of Europe all year round. That makes the distance to family and friends smaller than it seems.
